Sperm
Also known as: Sperm Cells; Spermatozoa; Spermatozoon
Description
Sperm are Male Reproductive Cells manufactured within the male Testes that contain the paternal genetic information to be contributed through the process of fertilization to female egg cells.
Production and Secretion of Sperm
Sexual System
During ejaculation, contractions of the Vans Deferens propel Sperm cells through the Ejaculatory Ducts into the Urethra where it combines with Seminal Plasma to form Semen where it accumulates under pressure behind the Urethral Sphincter until this Sphincter suddenly relaxes, allowing the discharge of Semen.
The production of Sperm is continuous and requires approximately 72 to 74 days for maturation from germ cells (spermatogonium) to spermatozoon. It is most efficient at 34° C (93.2° F), so exposure to excessive heat or prolonged fever within 2 to 3 months of evaluation can adversely affect Sperm count, motility, and morphology.
Sertoli Cells in the Seminiferous Tubules of the Testes sustain and regulate the maturation of Sperm.
These Substances may Enhance the Production/Motility/Quality of Sperm
The process of Sperm production is known medically as Spermatogenesis.
Low Sperm count is known medically as Oligospermia; Oligospermatism; Oligozoospermatism; and Oligozoospermia.
Amino Acids
Arginine may increase Sperm count and may improve Sperm motility by up to 100%. [1]
Carnitine concentrates in Sperm and provides Energy to the Sperm. It may also improve Sperm motility and supplementation with 3,000 mg of Carnitine per day may improve the quality and motility of Sperm (especially in Male Infertility patients). [2]
