Cortisol - Factors that Counteract
Description
This section outlines the substances, foods, herbs and other factors that counteract the negative and toxic effects of excessive Cortisol production or release.
These Substances may Minimize the Toxic Effects of Excessive Cortisol
Amino Acids
Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may reduce Stress-induced Cortisol release. [1]
Enzymes
11-beta-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of Cortisol to Cortisone.
Hormones
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) may help to maintain Cortisol balance (), thereby preventing elevated Cortisol levels and counteracting the toxic effects of Cortisol. DHEA may lower elevated Cortisol levels. [2]
Melatonin may lower the body’s levels of Cortisol (by stimulating the release of Vasotocin which in turn inhibits Cortisol release). [3]
Pregnenolone may counteract many of the toxic effects of excessive Cortisol. [4]
Testosterone may inhibit the excessive production of Cortisol. [5]
Vasotocin may inhibit the release of Cortisol.
Lipids
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) may minimize the catabolic effects of Cortisol.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids may inhibit the ability of (mental) Stress to increase Cortisol levels: [6]
Alpha-Linolenic Acid may inhibit the ability of (mental) Stress to increase Cortisol levels. [7]
Phosphatidylserine (PS) may reduce the endogenous release of Cortisol following intensive Exercise or excessive Stress. [8]
