Description

The GABAa Receptor is a specific Receptor that forms part of the GABA Receptor Complex.

Biological Function of GABAa Receptors

Nervous System

GABAa Receptors contain two separate binding sites - one distinct site for Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) and one distinct site for Benzodiazepines.

Activation of GABAa Receptors alleviates Panic Disorder (Panic Disorder patients have decreased propensity for GABAa Receptor binding).  [1]

Activation of GABAa Receptors is involved in Sleep - Rapid Eye Movement (REM Sleep).

These Substances Influence GABAa Receptors

Amino Acids

Taurine may increase the sensitivity of GABAa Receptors and may activate GABAa Receptors.  [2]

Theanine binds to GABAa Receptors.  [3]
