Glycerol
Description
Glycerol is a Polyhydric Alcohol with 3 Alcohol groups that can form esters with up to three (usually fatty) acids - i.e. it is a Lipid Alcohol.
Health Benefits of Glycerol
Musculoskeletal System
Glycerol (applied topically) may alleviate the Pain associated with Herpes Simplex Virus lesions.
Novel Uses of Glycerol
Musculoskeletal System
Bodybuilders (who undertake Isotonic Exercise) sometimes use Glycerol (approximately 50 ml combined with 500 ml Water) to increase their apparent vascularity and Muscles separation/definition. [1]
Skin
Glycerol applied topically may alleviate Psoriasis. [2]
Water and Water Balance
Endurance Athletes sometimes ingest large quantities of Glycerol in order to induce Water retention immediately prior to Exercise - Endurance.
The usual dosage of Glycerol used by endurance athletes is 1 gram of Glycerol per kilogram of body weight: [3]
Glycerol attracts water and readily permeates cell membranes by causing a change in pressure across cell membranes. It therefore counteracts the accelerated loss of Water (Dehydration) sustained by endurance athletes (especially when endurance Exercise is conducted in warm - hot temperatures). [4]
