Description

Estrone is a type of Estrogen - it is a Female Sexual Steroid Hormone.

Biological Function of Estrone

Musculoskeletal System

Estrone is produced in Osteoblasts (via the Aromatase enzyme, which catalyzes the conversion of Androstenedione to Estrone) - Estrone produced via this mechanism then activates Osteoblasts (thereby helping to prevent Osteoporosis).  [1]

Potentially Toxic Effects of Estrone

Immune System

Excessive production of Estrone (and impaired conversion of Estrone to Estriol within the Liver) has been closely linked to Breast Cancer.  [2]

Excessive endogenous production of Estrone may cause Endometrial Cancer.

Excessive production of Estrone (and impaired conversion of Estrone to Estriol within the Liver) has been closely linked to Ovarian Cancer.  [3]

Excessive production of Estrone may increase the risk of Prostate Cancer.

Excessive production of Estrone (and impaired conversion of Estrone to Estriol within the Liver) has been closely linked to Uterus Cancer.

Sexual System

Impaired conversion of Estrone to Estriol within the Liver may cause the PMS-A form of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).

These Substances may Facilitate the Production of Estrone

Alkaloids

Caffeine may increase plasma Estrone levels (especially in postmenopausal women).  [4]

Enzymes

Aromatase catalyzes the conversion of Androstenedione to Estrone.

Estradiol 17 Alpha-Dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of Estradiol 17-Alpha to Estrone.

Estradiol 17 Beta-Dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of Estradiol 17-Beta to Estrone.

Hormones

Estrone is produced in Osteoblasts from Androstenedione (via the Aromatase enzyme):  [5]

Small amounts (1 - 5%) of Androstenedione are converted (by Aromatase) within peripheral tissues (e.g. Adipose Tissue) to Estrone.
