Overview

Ovarian cancer is a malignant disease that develops in the ovaries, the female reproductive glands responsible for producing eggs (ova) and the hormones estrogen and progesterone. It occurs when abnormal ovarian cells grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor that can invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Although ovarian cancer is less common than some other cancers, it is considered one of the most serious gynecologic cancers because symptoms are often vague, and the disease is frequently diagnosed at a later stage.

Prevalence

Ovarian Cancer is the fifth most commonly occurring type of Cancer in women.

Ovarian Cancer accounts for 4% of all cases of Cancer in women and accounts for 5% of Cancer deaths in women (in the USA in 1994).

Approximately 1.5% of women eventually develop Ovarian Cancer, and approximately 1% of women die from Ovarian Cancer.

Most cases of Ovarian Cancer occur in women aged 50+, with the highest risk occurring in women aged 60+.

There is a hereditary factor in Ovarian Cancer.

Epidemiological studies indicate that women with the least exposure to Sunlight are 18 times more likely to develop Ovarian Cancer than those with the most exposure.

Enzymes

Bromelain (600 mg per day) may cause regression in some cases of Ovarian Cancer and inhibit its metastasis.  [8]

The body increases its endogenous production of (Cellular Manganese-containing) Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) in the presence of Ovarian Cancer (this implies that exogenous SOD may benefit the treatment of Ovarian Cancer).  [9]

Hormones

Melatonin may help the growth of tumor Cells involved in Ovarian Cancer.  [10]

Lipids

Betulinic Acid may stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of Ovarian Cancer cells.  [11]

Minerals

Calcium may help to prevent Ovarian Cancer.  [12]

Ovarian Cancer may be linked to Iodine deficiency (indicating that adequate dietary Iodine possibly prevents Ovarian Cancer).  [13]

Magnesium may help to prevent Ovarian Cancer.  [14]
