Pentoxifylline
Also known as: BL 191; Azupental; Durapental; Oxpentifylline; Pentaoxifylline; Pentoxil; Pentoxyphylline; PTX; Rentylin; Torental; Trental; Vazofirin; Xiphen
Description
Pentoxifylline is a type of Methylxanthine Bronchodilator Pharmaceutical Drug.
Therapeutic Usage of Pentoxifylline
Cardiovascular System
Pentoxifylline may improve Blood Circulation. [1]
Pentoxifylline may increase Blood Circulation to the Brain (and may therefore be useful in the treatment of Cerebral Insufficiency). [2]
Pentoxifylline may lower Hematocrit (Blood Viscosity) levels. [3]
Pentoxifylline may help to prevent (ischemic) Stroke (by inhibiting the abnormal Blood Clotting that causes ischemic Stroke).
Immune System
Pentoxifylline has been utilized (in LTR Therapy) to assist in preventing the replication of the HIV virus implicated in Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS):
Pentoxifylline targets the Long Terminal Repeat (LTR) segment of the HIV virus's DNA segment - it successfully inhibits Nuclear Factor-Kappa B (by suppressing the production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)).
It should be noted that Pentoxifylline should not be used in isolation as an agent of LTR Therapy as it only suppresses one (Kappa B) of several pathways by which HIV is replicated. Successful LTR Therapy strategy requires the usage of other drugs in combination with PMC in order to block the other HIV replication pathways.
