Myelin Sheath
Also known as: Medullary Sheath; Myelin; White Matter
Description
Myelin Sheaths are the Cell Membranes of the Axons of Neurons (Nerve Cells) - i.e. Nerve Cell Membranes. They are composed of Glial Cells and are produced by Oligodendroglia.
Components of Myelin Sheaths
Phospholipids and Glycolipids (i.e. Compound Lipids) comprise 70% - 80% of Myelin Sheaths.
Proteins comprise 20% - 30% of Myelin Sheaths.
These Substances may Enhance the Function of Myelin Sheaths
Amino Acids
Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may inhibit (and possibly reverse) the degeneration of Myelin Sheaths that occurs in tandem with the progression of the Aging Process. [1]
Histidine may be necessary for the maintenance of Myelin Sheaths.
Serine (as a component of Phosphatidylserine) is a component of Myelin Sheaths.
Taurine may help to stabilize the electrical activity of Myelin Sheaths.
Valine is a component of Myelin Sheaths.
Animal Organ Extracts
Myelin Sheath Extract may inhibit the degeneration of Myelin Sheaths.
Carbohydrates
Galactose is a constituent of Galactocerebrosides (which account for 15% of the Lipids (Glycolipids) present in Myelin Sheaths).
Hormones
Insufficient production of Androgens may cause thinning of Myelin Sheaths (indicating that supplemental Androgens may prevent the thinning of Myelin Sheaths). [2]
