Overview

Thyrotropin is a glycoprotein hormone produced in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It stimulates and regulates the thyroid gland's activity.

Biological Function of Thyrotropin

Metabolism

Thyrotropin insufficiency may cause Hypothyroidism and/or Goiter (due to insufficient secretion of Thyroid Hormones).

Thyroid Hormones

Thyrotropin stimulates the production and secretion of Thyroid Hormones (Thyroxine [1] and Triiodothyronine from the Thyroid Gland. Thyroid hormone production and secretion regulation are subject to a Negative Feedback Mechanism.  [2]

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Thyrotropin

Amino Acids

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may increase the body's levels of circulating Thyrotrophin.

Hormones

Thyrotrophin-Releasing Hormone (secreted by the Hypothalamus) controls the rate at which Thyrotrophin is released from the Pituitary Gland.  [3]

Lipids

Phosphatidylserine (PS) may help to normalize the daily secretion of Thyrotrophin.  [4]
