Also known as:  Hypoacidity;  Achlorhydria (total absence of Hydrochloric Acid secretion)

Description

Hypochlorhydria is an ailment characterized by a lack of Hydrochloric Acid secretion.

Prevalence

Up to 30% of people aged 65 and over suffer from seriously diminished HCl production.

These Substances may Increase the body's Production of Hydrochloric Acid

Alkaloids

Supplemental Betaine Hydrochloride (520 - 650 mg per large meal) functions as a supplemental source of Hydrochloric Acid for Hypochlorhydria patients.  [1]

Caffeine may increase the body's production of Hydrochloric Acid.  [2]

Amino Acids

Glycine may alleviate Hypochlorhydria (by stimulating the production of Hydrochloric Acid).  [3]

Lysine may be required for the production of Hydrochloric Acid.  [4]

Lipids

Forskolin may stimulate the release of Hydrochloric Acid within the Stomach.

Minerals

Chlorine is an essential component of Hydrochloric Acid.

The Potassium Chloride form of Potassium may alleviate Hypochlorhydria (by stimulating the production of Hydrochloric Acid).

 Iodine deficiency may cause Hypochlorhydria.

Zinc is required for the production of Hydrochloric Acid and may therefore be useful for the treatment of Hypochlorhydria.  [5]

Neurotransmitters

Histamine may stimulate increased production of Hydrochloric Acid.  [6]

Vitamins

Vitamin B1 may alleviate Hypochlorhydria (by stimulating the production of Hydrochloric Acid).  [7]

Vitamin B3 may alleviate Hypochlorhydria (by stimulating the production of Hydrochloric Acid):  [8]

Nicotinic Acid may alleviate Hypochlorhydria.  [9]

Hypochlorhydria may occur as a result of Vitamin B5 deficiency.  [10]

Vitamin B6 may alleviate Hypochlorhydria (by stimulating the production of Hydrochloric Acid).

Vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to Hypochlorhydria.

These Foods/Herbs may Increase the body's Production of Hydrochloric Acid

Beverages

Coffee may increase the body's production of Hydrochloric Acid (primarily due to the Caffeine content of Coffee).

Tea may increase the body' s production of Hydrochloric Acid.

Wine may increase the body' s production of Hydrochloric Acid.

Herbs

Gentian reputedly increases the body's production of Hydrochloric Acid (according to folklore).
