Embolism
Description
Embolism is the obstruction or occlusion of a Blood Vessel by an Embolus (an Embolus is a detached Blood Clot or foreign body). In most cases Embolism involves blockage by a piece of a Blood Clot (Thrombus) that has broken off a Clot somewhere else in the body that has found its way into an Artery in the Brain where it lodges. Embolism is fatal in around 25% of cases that require hospitalization.
Prevalence
Embolism (Venous Thromboembolism form) is the third most common type of Cardiovascular Disease in the USA.

Continuous infusion of intravenous Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) was once the primary treatment for Venous Thromboembolism.
Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin (LMWHs) are now the treatment of choice for Venous Thromboembolism.
