Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Overview
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 is characterized by Cold Sores, usually on and around the Lips. HSV1 is characterized by the appearance of single or multiple clusters of small Blisters filled with a clear fluid on a reddened base. These Blisters eventually burst, leaving small, painful Ulcers that heal in 10 - 21 days. This phase of the Virus is known as an outbreak. The Virus then reverts to its' dormant state.
Less frequently, the virus affects the Cornea of the Eye (when this occurs the infection is referred to as Herpes Simplex Keratitis or Corneal Herpes Simplex).
Although the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 usually affects the Lips, it can also infect the genitals (in which case it can be confused with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2).
Prevalence
Up to 90% of the world's population is infected with HSV1:
Approximately 40% of persons who have had one HSV1 outbreak never suffer from a second outbreak, while others may suffer from up to six attacks per year for several years following the first outbreak.
With the passage of time, the interval between outbreaks increases and the severity of the outbreaks diminishes.
These Substances may Inhibit the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Amino Acids
Lysine (1,000 - 3,000 mg per day) may accelerate the healing of the lesions associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, may reduce the severity of the lesions associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 and may reduce the number of recurrences of the lesions associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. Topical application of Lysine cream may accelerate the healing of the lesions associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [1]
Antioxidants - Synthetic
Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) (250 - 2,000 mg per day) may be particularly effective for suppressing the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1: [2]
BHT may totally suppress the Herpes Simplex Type 1 Virus and may accelerate the healing of existing Herpes lesions. It may prevent non-infected people from contracting the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 from infected people.
Carbohydrates
Acemannan (gel applied topically) may alleviate the lesions associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1.
Carrageenans (Carrageenan iota, Carrageenan kappa and Carrageenan lambda) may inhibit the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [3]
Fucoidan may inhibit/kill Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [4]
Cosmeceuticals
Retin-A (applied topically) may inhibit the replication of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [5]
Free Radicals
Singlet Oxygen(although normally extremely toxic to the body) can be harnessed by Hypericin and utilized to destroy the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1).
Glycosides - Saponins
Glycyrrhizin may possess anti-viral activity against the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1.
Immune System Chemicals
Human Herpes Virus-1 Specific Transfer Factor may be an effective treatment for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 - it may reduce the duration of recurrences of the acute phase of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (i.e. lesions) and may reduce the frequency of the reappearances of the lesions of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [6]
Lipids
Eugenol may kill the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [7]
Docosanol (10% cream applied topically) may accelerate the healing of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 lesions. [8]
Undecylenic Acid (applied topically) may inhibit Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1. [9]
Microorganisms
Lactobacillus acidophilus (capsules consumed orally) may alleviate the oral ulceration associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1.
Minerals
Frequent recurrence of the Cold Sores associated with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 may be a symptom of Calcium deficiency.
Clinoptilolite (a type of Zeolite) may inhibit the replication of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1.
The Lithium Succinate form of Lithium (ointment applied topically) may accelerate the healing of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 lesions in up to 70% of cases. Oral Lithium therapy may reduce the number of episodes of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 outbreaks, may reduce the duration of each episode and may reduce the severity of the symptoms of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 outbreaks.
