Phospholipase A2 is responsible for the release of Arachidonic Acid from Cell Membranes.
Phospholipase A2 catalyzes the Hydrolysis of Phospholipids to Lysophospholipids by removing a Fatty Acid from the 2-position. The precise reaction catalyzed by Phospholipase A2 is as follows:
Phospholipase A2 + Water acts on Phosphatidylcholine (or Phosphatidylethanolamine or Choline Plasmalogen or other Phosphatides) to produce 1-Acylglyerophosphocholine and a Fatty Acid.
Phospholipase A2 plays an important role in the production of Prostaglandins and Leukotrienes from Arachidonic Acid.
