Description

Malondialdehyde is a highly reactive three carbon Dialdehyde produced as a byproduct of Lipid Peroxidation.

Toxic Effects of Malondialdehyde

Aging Process

Malondialdehyde may accelerate various aspects of the Aging Process.

Cardiovascular System

Malondialdehyde may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis.

Eyes/Vision

Malondialdehyde may increase the risk of Cataracts.

Elevated Malondialdehyde levels may increase the risk of (diabetic) Retinopathy.  [1]

Immune System

Malondialdehyde-modified molecules may show altered behavior and may function as Antigens.

Metabolism

Malondialdehyde may initiate the process of Cross-Linking of the body’s endogenous Proteins.

Malondialdehyde mediates many of the toxic effects of Oxidation (Lipid Peroxidation) and Free Radicals:

Malondialdehyde readily combines with several functional groups on molecules such as Proteins, Lipoproteins, and Deoxyribonucleic Acd (DNA).
