Sebaceous Glands
Also known as: Oil Glands
Description
Sebaceous Glands are simple, branched Glands that reside in the Dermis of the Skin and open into the Hair Follicles of the Scalp/Skin. There are approximately 100 Sebaceous Glands per square inch of Skin. The Sebaceous Glands are most active during Puberty.
Biological Function of the Sebaceous Glands
Skin/Hair
The Sebaceous Glands secrete Sebum (type of endogenous oil) onto the surface of the Skin through small ducts that lead to the Hair Follicles.
Secretions from the Sebaceous Glands are a major route for the delivery of Vitamin E to the Skin. [1]
