Description
The Adrenal Cortex is the outer, tough part of the Adrenal Glands that is comprised of yellowish tissue (mesodermal tissue). The Adrenal Cortex comprises 80% to 90% of the Adrenal Glands.
Biological Functions of the Adrenal Cortex
Corticosteroid Hormones
Glucocorticoids are manufactured and secreted by the Adrenal Cortex:
Corticosterone
Cortisol (secreted by the Zona Fasciculata of the Adrenal Cortex)
Cortisone
Mineralocorticoids are manufactured and secreted by the Adrenal Cortex:
Aldosterone (secreted by the Zona Glomerulosa of the Adrenal Cortex)
Immune System Hormones
Platelet Aggregating Factor (PAF) is manufactured by the Adrenal Cortex.
