Description

Dendrites are short Fibers that extend from the Soma of Neurons.  They branch profusely and receive several thousand contacts from other Neurons (resulting in Convergence of Information).  Several Dendrites extend from each Soma.

 

Biological Functions of Dendrites

Nervous System

 Dendrites RECEIVE Nerve Impulses (transmitted by Axons on other Neurons) via Neurotransmitter Receptors located on the Dendritic Membrane.

 Optimal reception of Nerve Impulses by Dendrites is essential in order for new Learning and Memory to occur and new Learning requires the growth of new Dendrites.

 

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Dendrites

Alkaloids

 Huperzine A (an Alkaloid present in Club Moss) may promote the outgrowth of Neurons’ Dendrites. 

 

Amino Acids

 Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may stimulate the growth of Dendrites. 

 Proline may stimulate the growth of Dendrites.  [1]
