Cerebellum
Description
The Cerebellum is a large, primitive, highly convoluted component of the Brain - it is divided into two hemispheres. The Cerebellum is situated below the Occipital Area of the Cerebral Hemispheres, behind the Pons and Medulla of the Brain Stem. The Cerebellum is connected to the other parts of the Brain by three massive trunks of White Matter known as Cerebellar Peduncles.
Biological Functions of the Cerebellum
Musculoskeletal System
The Cerebellum is involved in the maintenance of Muscle Tone (i.e. the conversion of muscular contractions into smooth, coordinated movement):
The Cerebellum plans voluntary movements subconsciously before they are consciously executed by the Cerebral Hemispheres.
Nervous System
The Cerebellum is necessary (together with the Subthalamus) for the proper integration of movement (motor activity) and posture (Coordination).
