Description

5'-Deiodinase is a type of Deiodinase enzyme.

Function of 5'-Deiodinase

Hormones

5'-Deiodinase catalyzes the conversion of Thyroxine (T4) to Triiodothyronine (T3) in peripheral tissues.  Under normal physiological conditions, approximately 30% of Thyroxine is converted by this enzyme to Triiodothyronine.

5'-Deiodinase catalyzes the conversion of Reverse T3 (reverse T3)to 3,3'-Dioodothyronine (3,3'-T2) in peripheral tissues.

Metabolism

Increasing 5'-Deiodinase activity is useful for Euthyroid Sick Syndrome patients (due to its role in the production of Triiodothyronine from Thyroxine).

These Substances may Enhance the Function of 5'-Deiodinase

Minerals

Selenium (in the form of Selenocysteine) is a cofactor for 5'-Deiodinase (Type I).  [1]

Vitamins

Vitamin C may inhibit the ability of Cadmium to reduce the activity of 5'-Deiodinase (the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of Thyroxine to Triiodothyronine).  [2]
