Cystitis
Description
Cystitis is an Inflammation (often infectious) of the wall and lining of the Bladder.
Prevalence
Cystitis is more prevalent in women than in men:
Cystitis most commonly occurs when Detrimental Bacteria migrate up through the Urethra to the Bladder - the female Urethra is shorter and straighter than the male Urethra (which is longer and more tortuous), allowing easier passage of pathogens to the female Bladder than to the male Bladder.
These Substances may Alleviate Cystitis
Alkaloids
Berberine may inhibit the ability of Detrimental Bacteria to adhere to the wall of the Bladder and may thereby help to prevent and control (bacterial) Cystitis. [1]
Glycosides
Hydroquinones (formed within the body from the hydrolysis of Arbutin) may act as an antiseptic for Cystitis (however potentially toxic, large doses are required). [2]
Microorganisms
Lactobacillus acidophilus - DDS-1 strain may reduce the incidence of Cystitis.
Organic Acids
Hippuric Acid (formed within the body from the metabolism of Benzoic Acid and Quinic Acid) may inhibit the Detrimental Bacteria (especially Eschericia Coli) that cause (bacterial) Cystitis. [3]
These Foods/Herbs may Alleviate Cystitis
Fruit
Cranberry may prevent Cystitis (due to its Benzoic Acid and Quinic Acid metabolizing to Hippuric Acid which prevents Detrimental Bacteria such as Eschericia Coli from adhering to the Epithelial Cells of the Bladder). [4]
