Silicon
Description
Silicon is an essential, acidic, non-metallic Micromineral. Silicon is not found in nature in its pure form (i.e. as pure Silicon) as it rapidly reacts with atmospheric Oxygen and Water. In nature, Silicon is found almost exclusively in the form of Silica (as Silicates). Silicates are components of rocks and sand. Silicates are tetrahedral structures consisting of one Silicon atom surrounded by four Oxygen atoms. Silicates are poorly bioavailable to the human body.
Chemical Symbol: Si
Health Benefits of Silicon
Aging & Life Extension
Silicon may retard the onset of some aspects of the Aging Process.
Cardiovascular System
Silicon may help to reverse Atherosclerosis and Atherosclerosis may occur as a result of Silicon deficiency: [1]
Silicon is abundant in the Arteries of people who are free of Atherosclerosis.
Silicon levels in Arteries may decrease immediately prior to the development of the atherosclerotic plaques that occur in Atherosclerosis.
Silicon may be essential to the structural integrity, elasticity and permeability of Blood Vessels including Arteries: [2]
Silicon is required for Collagen synthesis in the Intima of Blood Vessels. [3]
Digestive System
Silicon may accelerate the healing of Ulcers - Gastric.
Silicon may alleviate (chronic or acute) Gastritis. [4]
Excretory System
Silicon may alleviate (urinary) Urinary Incontinence by strengthening the Bladder Muscles (after three months of continuous daily use of supplemental Silicon).
Silicon may prevent excessive Perspiration (Hyperhidrosis).
Silicon may accelerate the clearance of Waste Products from the body.
Hair
Silicon concentrates in the Hair and may contribute to Hair growth. [5]
Silicon (applied topically or administered orally) may improve Hair Condition: [6]
Silicon (10 mg of Orthosilicic Acid per day) may alleviate Hair - Brittle. [7]
Hair Loss may occur as a result of Silicon deficiency and Silicon supplementation may accelerate Hair Growth when the Hair Follicles are still alive. [8]
Immune System
Silicon may improve the function of NK Lymphocytes. [9]
Silicon may improve the function of the Thymus Gland.
Metabolism
Silicon may increase Stamina.
Musculoskeletal System
Silicon concentrates in the Bones and may enhance the health and growth of Bones (retarded Bone development can occur as a result of Silicon deficiency). [10]
Silicon is a component of Chondroblasts.
Silicon concentrates in Cartilage and may stimulate the formation of Cartilage - Silicon may stimulate Chondroblasts to deposit ChondroitinSulfate, Hyaluronic Acid and KeratinSulfate onto Cartilage matrix. [11]
Silicon may maintain the health of Connective Tissues - Components (by contributing to the optimal Cross-Linking of Connective Tissues and by stabilizing the Glycosaminoglycans network of Connective Tissues). [12]
Silicon may accelerate the healing of Fractures.
Silicon may be essential for the integrity of Ligaments and supplemental Silicon may facilitate the recovery from pulled or stiff Ligaments. [13]
Silicon may facilitate the removal of the arthritic nodules and spurs that occur in conjunction with Osteoarthritis.
