Description

Chlamydia trachomatis is a species of Detrimental Chlamydia Bacteria.

Prevalence

Approximately 18% of adolescents in developed countries have been infected with Chlamydia trachomatis.

Transmission of Chlamydia trachomatis

Chlamydia trachomatis is transmitted through infected secretions only.  It primarily infects Mucous Membranes, such as those of the Cervix, Rectum, Urethra, Throat, and Conjunctiva.

Chlamydia trachomatis is is primarily spread via sexual contact and manifests as the sexually transmitted disease.  It is not easily spread among women, so the Venereal Disease form is mainly transmitted by heterosexual or male homosexual contact.  However, infected secretions from the genitals to the hands and eventually to the Eyes can cause Trachoma:

Chlamydia trachomatis can be transmitted via anal sex (causing infection of the Rectum) - sometimes this infection causes Pain in the Rectum and discharge of Mucous from the Anus, however usually it does not cause any symptoms.

Chlamydia trachomatis can be transmitted via oral sex (causing Pharyngitis in the recipient).

Chlamydia trachomatis infection can also occur (less commonly) by swimming in unchlorinated pools, sharing towels or by passage through the birth canal.
