5-Alpha Reductase
Description
5-Alpha Reductase is a type of endogenous Oxidoreductase Enzyme manufactured in the Prostate, Adrenal Glands and the Scalp.
Biological Function of 5-Alpha Reductase
Hormones
5-Alpha Reductase catalyzes the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT): [1]
Approximately 6 - 10% of the body’s Testosterone is converted to DHT.
5-Alpha Reductase catalyzes the conversion of Androstenedione to 5-Alpha Androstenedione (5AA).

Prescribed Medications
5-Alpha Reductase catalyzes the conversion of Nandrolone Decanoate to its “dihydro” form, Dihydronandrolone.
Toxic Effects of 5-Alpha Reductase
Hair
5-Alpha Reductase is present in the Dermal Papilla (where it may contribute to Male Pattern Baldness). [2]
5-Alpha Reductase may be implicated in Hirsutism.
5-Alpha Reductase may be implicated in Male Pattern Baldness (due to its role as a catalyst for the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone). [3]
Immune System
Excessive 5-Alpha Reductase levels or activity may be implicated in Prostate Cancer.
Sexual System (Male)
5-Alpha Reductase may be implicated in Enlarged Prostate (due to its role as a catalyst for the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone - excessive serum Dihydrotestosterone is strongly implicated as a cause of Enlarged Prostate).
