Description

Peony is a type of Herb.  All three species of Chinese Peony are perennial plants that reach heights of up to nine meters.  Tree Peony grows even taller.

 

Botanical Name

 Paeonia lactiflora (Chinese Peony)  This species is used in Chinese medicine.  Wild harvested Paeonia lactiflora root is known as Red Peony root.  Cultivated Paeonia lactiflora root is known as White Peony root.

 Paeonia obovata (Chinese Peony)

 Paeonia officinalis (Flowers from this species are eaten as a Vegetable in Japan)  (Root is used in herbalism).

 Paeonia suffruticosa (Tree Peony;  Moutan;  Mu Dan) (This root bark of this species is used in Chinese medicine).
