Description

6-Hydroxydopamine is a toxic metabolite of Dopamine (a Neurotoxin).

Toxic Effects of 6-Hydroxydopamine

Metabolism

6-OHDA may interfere with the body’s production of Energy (due to 6-OHDA causing depletion of Complex I in the Mitochondria).  [1]

Nervous System

6-OHDA (after its uptake into Dopamine Receptors) may further auto-oxidize into toxic Free Radicals that damage Dopamine Receptors.

 6-OHDA may impair Learning ability.

 6-OHDA may impair Memory.

In addition to damaging Dopaminergic Neurons and Dopamine Receptors, 6-Hydroxydopamine may also damage other types of Neurons.  [2]

6-OHDA (after gaining uptake into Dopamine Receptors) has been implicated in Parkinson's Disease.  [3]

6-OHDA may cause massive lesions in the Substantia Nigra region of the Brain.

6-OHDA may Interfere with these Substances

Enzymes

6-OHDA may cause depletion of Complex I (an enzyme in the Mitochondria that is integral to the production of Energy by the Electron Transport System).  [4]
