 Many commercial Toothpastes inhibit the formation of Calculus (Toothpastes that are specifically formulated to inhibit Calculus formation are often labeled as Anti-Tartar Toothpaste).

 Toothpastes that contain Fluoride (either of several forms of Fluoride) reduce the incidence of Tooth Decay.

 

Constituents of Toothpaste

Abrasives

       Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate is the abrasive constituent of some commercial brands of Toothpaste.

 Sodium Bicarbonate is the abrasive constituent of some commercial brands of commercial Toothpaste

 

Detergents

 Cocoamidopropyl-Betaine (CAPB) is commonly used as a Detergent in commercial Toothpaste (it comprises between 0.64% and 1.9% of those Toothpastes in which it is a constituent).

   Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is the most widely employed Detergent in commercial Toothpaste (it usually constitutes between 0.5% and 1.5% of the total weight of Toothpastes in which it is an ingredient).
