Substance P is believed to function as a Neurotransmitter within the Enteric Nervous System (ENS).
Nervous System
Nerve Impulses relating to Pain stimulate the release of Substance P in the Dorsal Horn of the Spinal Cord where Substance P transmits further Nerve Impulses relating to Pain to the Brain, specifically the Brain Stem and the Thalamus, via the Spinothalamic Tract and the Spinoreticular Tract. [2]
