Mucous
Description
Mucous is a viscous fluid secreted by Mucous Membranes (Mucosa). It is comprised of Glycoproteins - primarily Mucin. The thickened (purulent, viscous) Mucous produced during some Respiratory System ailments contains a significantly higher level of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) compared to normal Mucous.
Biological Function of Mucous
Musculoskeletal System
Mucous acts as a protective barrier and lubricant for the body's Mucous Membranes
These Substances may Alleviate Conditions involving Excess Mucous
Any substance that causes Mucous to flow through the Lungs into the Throat is known as an Expectorant.
Alkaloids
Capsaicin may facilitate the elimination of excessive Mucous from the body.
Amino Acids & Amino Acid Derivatives
Alliin (a derivative of Cysteine) may help to regulate the body's flow of Mucous.
Cysteine (and N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)) breaks down Mucous in the Respiratory Tract, especially in the Lungs and Bronchial Tubes (by facilitating its liquefaction). [1]
Enzymes
Bromelain may reduce the quantity of Mucous produced by (chronic) Bronchitis and Pneumonia patients and may reduce the quantity of Mucous produced during Staphylococcus aureus infections. [2]
