Alpha-1 Antitrypsin is the principal endogenous Protease Inhibitor - it is synthesized in the Liver. Chemically it is a Glycoprotein.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin inhibits Elastase.
Immune System
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin may help to suppress HIV Protease, a component of the HIV virus, and may thereby inhibit the replication of the HIV virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
