Alveoli are small air spaces (sacs) in the Lungs that are surrounded by networks of Capillaries.
Biological Function of the Alveoli
Respiratory System
Alveoli are the site of the exchange of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide within the Lungs:
The Heart pumps Oxygen-depleted Blood through the Pulmonary Arteries where inhaled Oxygen diffuses from the Alveoli to the Blood (via Capillaries).
Inhaled and exogenous Carbon Dioxide diffuses into the Alveoli and is subsequently exhaled.
These Substances may Enhance the Function of the Alveoli
Lipids
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (LNA) may facilitate the exchange of Oxygen through the Alveoli.
