Barbiturates
Overview
Barbiturates are a group of Minor Tranquilizer Pharmaceutical Drugs derived from Barbituric Acid that depress the activity of the Central Nervous System (CNS) by enhancing the activity of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA).
Therapeutic Uses of Barbiturates
Nervous System
Barbiturates are usually prescribed to relieve Insomnia resulting from Anxiety (i.e. as Sleeping Pills):
Caution: Barbiturates alleviate Insomnia only in the short term; long-term use may exacerbate Insomnia.
Toxic Effects of Barbiturates
Overdose of Barbiturates may cause DEATH.
Cardiovascular System
Barbiturate overdose may cause a significant fall in Blood Pressure (Hypotension) that may result in death (due to Barbiturate overdose causing severe depression of the Central Nervous System).
