Description

Plasminogen is a type of precursor (proenzyme) of Plasmin.

Biological Function of Plasminogen

Cardiovascular System

Plasminogen (indirectly) helps to prevent abnormal Blood Clotting (by serving as a precursor for Plasmin).

Plasminogen helps to prevent Thrombosis (by serving as a precursor for Plasmin).

Plasminogen Enhances the Function of these Substances

Enzymes

Plasminogen is the immediate precursor (proenzyme) of Plasmin (Plasmin is normally in its inactivated state (as Plasminogen) until activated (by various enzymes).

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Plasminogen

Enzymes

Bromelain may activate Plasminogen to form Plasmin.  [1]

Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA) activates Plasminogen to form Plasmin.

Trypsin activates Plasminogen to form Plasmin.

Urokinase catalyzes the activation of Plasmin (from its precursor, Plasminogen).
