Overview

Chinese Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a perennial plant in the mint family, like common sage, and is native to China and parts of East Asia. It is widely recognized for its significant role in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The plant is distinguished by its vibrant red roots, which are the primary source of its medicinal properties. For centuries, Chinese Red Sage has been utilized to treat a variety of ailments, especially those related to cardiovascular health.

The active compounds in Salvia miltiorrhiza include tanshinones (lipophilic diterpenes) and salvianolic acids (water-soluble phenolic acids), both of which contribute to its powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory effects. These bioactive compounds are thought to enhance blood circulation, reduce blood clotting, and protect against oxidative stress, making the herb valuable in treating and preventing heart disease, atherosclerosis, and stroke.
