Otosclerosis
Description
Otosclerosis is an hereditary (autosomal dominant) ailment of the Middle Ear. It involves an overgrowth of the Bone of the Inner Ear which leads to the third Bone (Ossicle) of the Middle Ear (the Stapes) becoming fixed (fused) to the opening (window) between the Middle Ear (i.e. the Fenestra Ovalis) and the vestibule of the Inner Ear. This fixation interferes with the conduction of sounds to the Inner Ear. Otosclerosis is regarded as a form of Conductive Hearing Loss.
Prevalence
Otosclerosis affects approximately 10% of white adults. Of this 10% only approximately 10% suffer from Conductive Hearing Loss. Otosclerosis usually becomes clinically evident during the late teenage or early adult years.
