Olfactory Receptors

Also known as:  Smell Receptors

Olfactory Receptors are a type of Receptor located in the Mucous Membranes high in the Nose.  Olfactory Receptors continually grow, die and regenerate, as part of a cycle that lasts from four to eight weeks.  These Receptors are the only Neuron component that are regularly replaced throughout life.

Nervous System

 Olfactory Receptors detect sensations of Smell (i.e. Odors) and send Nerve Impulses to the Brain through the cribriform plate.
