Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Overview
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), also known as Acute Inflammatory Polyneuropathy, is a rare and severe autoimmune condition where the immune system erroneously attacks the peripheral nervous system. This system involves nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord, which are crucial for carrying signals between the brain and the rest of the body. In GBS, the immune response harms the myelin sheath, the nerves’ protective layer, resulting in inflammation, muscle weakness, and, in some cases, paralysis.
Prevalence
Guillain-Barre Syndrome is relatively rare - it afflicts approximately one person in 100,000.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome can affect anybody. It can strike at any age, and both sexes are equally prone to this ailment.
