Description

Inositol Triphosphate is a type of Second Messenger formed from Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Biphosphate.

Functions of Inositol Triphosphate

Cells

In its role as a Second Messenger, Inositol Triphosphate releases Calcium (Ca++) from the Endoplasmic Reticulum of Cells.  The Ca++ then activates certain intracellular Protein Kinases.

Immune System

Inositol Triphosphate is the Second Messenger that is responsible for the activation of Neutrophils.

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Inositol Triphosphate

Enzymes

Phospholipase C catalyzes the production of Inositol Triphosphate.

Lipids

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Biphosphate is a precursor for the production of Inositol Triphosphate.

These Substances use Inositol Triphosphate as their Second Messenger
