Also known as:  Phenycyclidine Receptors

Description

PCP Receptors are a sub-component of NMDA (N-Methyl-D-Aspartate) Receptors.  They are located within the transmembrane channel of NMDA Receptors.

Toxic Effects of Activation of PCP Receptors

Nervous System

When PCP Receptors are activated, they antagonize the actions of Aspartic Acid, Glutamic Acid and N-Methyl-D-Aspartate, preventing the normal activation of NMDA Receptors - substances that activate PCP Receptors "plug" the Ion Channel of the NMDA Receptor, preventing Calcium Ion influx.

These Substances may Stimulate PCP Receptors

Recreational Drugs

Ketamine binds to and activates PCP Receptors.

Phencyclidine (PCP) binds to and activates PCP Receptors.
