5-HT3 Receptors are a Sub-type of 5-HT (5-Hydroxytryptamine or Serotonin) Receptor.

 

Biological Functions of 5-HT3 Receptors

Nervous System

 5-HT3 Receptors are located on Cholinergic Neurons and inhibit the release of Acetylcholine from these Receptors when they are activated by Serotonin.

 Activation of 5-HT3 Receptors can cause Vomiting.

 

These Substances Prevent the Activation of 5-HT3 Receptors

Smart Drugs

 5-HT3 Receptor Antagonists - (e.g. Granisetron, Ondansetron, Tropisetron and Zatosetron - bind specifically to 5-HT3 Receptors (but not other types of 5-HT Receptors), thereby blocking their ability to receive Serotonin (consequently preventing Serotonin from inhibiting the release of Acetylcholine).
