Microglia
Description
Microglia are a specialized type of Glial Cell. They constitute 10% to 20% of the total number of Cells of the Central Nervous System.

Many of the "defense" functions of the Immune System that are normally undertaken by White Blood Cells in the rest of the body are performed by Microglia within the Central Nervous System (as White Blood Cells are normally excluded from the CNS): [1]
Microglia (when in their phagocytic state) are involved in "scavenging" functions within the Central Nervous System (they function in a similar manner to Macrophages):
