Also known as:  Glandulae Tarsales;  Meibomian Glands;  Palpebral Glands

Description

The Tarsal Glands are embedded in the Tarsal Plate of each Eyelid.  They are similar to Sebaceous Glands but are located in the Eyelids.  Their discharge site is at the edge of each Eyelid near the posterior Border.

Biological Function of the Tarsal Glands

Eyes/Vision

The Tarsal Glands help to prevent Eyes - Dry (due to their role in producing some of the endogenous Lipids that comprise Tears).

The Tarsal Glands secrete Sebum that creates a lipid barrier along the margin of the Eyelids.  This lipid barrier helps to prevent the evaporation of the water-soluble components of Tears.
