Description

Dental Fillings are a dentistry procedure involving the insertion of replacement material into cavities caused by Tooth Decay.  The average Dental Filling weighs 1.5 - 2 grams.

Types of Dental Fillings

Amalgam Dental Fillings are usually composed of an alloy comprising 46% to 56% (elemental, metallic) Mercury, 35% Silver, 13% Tin and 2% Copper.  There is presently much consumer concern as to the toxicity of the Mercury component of Amalgam Dental Fillings.

Plastic Polymer Dental Fillings are regarded as safer than Amalgam and are commonly employed by health-conscious Dentists.

Potentially Toxic Effects of Dental Fillings

The Mercury component of Amalgam Dental Fillings is believed to “leach out” during a persons’ lifetime and because of this “leaching” there is concern as to the quantity of Mercury that a person with Amalgam Dental Fillings may be exposed to over the course of their lifetime.  It has been estimated that (depending on the number of fillings a Mouth contains), an individual may be exposed to 10 - 100 mcg of Mercury each day from their Amalgam Dental Fillings:  [1]
