Description

Fever involves a body temperature that is elevated above the normal range of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius).

 

 

 

Biological Function of Fever

Immune System

 Body temperature is normally regulated by the Hypothalamus - Fever is regarded as a defense mechanism of the Immune System against Infections - elevated temperature prevents the survival of some Viruses and Bacteria (elevated temperature promotes the production of Free Radicals that destroy such Viruses and Bacteria).

 

These Substances may Alleviate Fevers

Lipids

 Beta-Sitosterol may reduce Fever.  [1]

 

Minerals

 Excessive proneness to Fever may be a symptom of Magnesium deficiency. 

 Fevers may occur as a result of Sodium deficiency. 

 

Prescribed Medications

 Aspirin may reduce Fever (by blocking the Cyclooxygenase enzyme that produces the Prostaglandin E2 that is implicated in Fever):

 Caution:  Aspirin also inhibits numerous beneficial Enzymes and Prostaglandins.

 Paracetamol may reduce Fever.

 

Quinones

 Rhein may help to reduce Fever. 

 

Vitamins

 Fever (of unknown origin) may occur as a result of Vitamin B12 deficiency.  [2]

 Vitamin C may reduce Fever (by inhibiting Prostaglandin E2 production).
