Platelet Aggregating Factor (PAF) may be implicated in Atherosclerosis.
Aldehydes
Malondialdehyde may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis.
Amides
Acrylamide may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis. [1]
Amino Acids
Excessive conversion of Histidine to Histamine by the Histidine Decarboxylase enzyme within the walls of Arteries may occur in Atherosclerosis patients.
Homocysteine may be an important (possibly the most significant) cause of Atherosclerosis. [2]
Carbohydrates
Excessive consumption of Simple Sugars may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis (due to Simple Sugars causing Cross-Linking [glycosylation] of Collagen of the Arteries):
Excessive consumption of Sucrose may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis. [3]
Enzymes
Excessive activity of Gelatinase B may cause Atherosclerosis.
Excessive conversion of Histidine to Histamine by the Histidine Decarboxylase enzyme within the walls of Arteries may occur in Atherosclerosis patients.
Elevated levels of Lipoprotein-Associated Phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) increase the risk of and are a biomarker for Atherosclerosis.
It has been speculated that Xanthine Oxidase (XO) (when absorbed because of Homogenization of Milk products) may contribute to the development of Atherosclerosis. [4]
Environmental Toxins
Exposure to Air Pollution may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis. [5]
Carbon Monoxide may be implicated in Atherosclerosis.
Hormones
Exogenous, pharmaceutical Insulin (usually given to Diabetes patients) may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis. Excessive endogenous Insulin production may also increase the risk of Atheroslcerosis. [6]
Elevated Leptin levels may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis.
Immune System Chemicals
Elevated Interleukin 6 levels may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis (by stimulating the proliferation of the Endothelium of Blood Vessels, by increasing the permeatiblity of the lining of Blood Vessels and by stimulating the production of C-Reactive Protein). [7]
Lipids
Excessive Arachidonic Acid may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis (due to its role as a precursor for Leukotriene B4, Prostaglandin E2 and Thromboxane A2 production). [8]
High levels of (oxidized) LDL Cholesterol may be a risk factor for Atherosclerosis. [9]
Excessive production/activity of Leukotriene B4 may be implicated in Atherosclerosis. [10]
Elevated Lipoprotein (a) levels may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis. [11]
Malvalic Acid may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis.
