Description

This section outlines the various dosage protocols for Vitamin D supplementation or dietary intake.  It also contains information about the bioavailability of Vitamin D.

Taking Weight Into Account

As of the year 2010, many experts now recommend basing Vitamin D dosages on weight, with the optimal dose of supplemental Vitamin D being 77 IU per kg of body weight per day.

Insufficiency of Current RDIs

Many experts believe that the current RDAs for Vitamin D are too low.  In postmenopausal women, 400 IU (10 micrograms) per day is insufficient to protect against Osteoporosis whereas 800 IU (20 micrograms) Vitamin D plus supplemental Calcium decreased the risk of Fractures in elderly women with low dietary Calcium intake.

One factor supporting the notion that current RDIs for Vitamin D are too low is the knowledge that 10 - 15 minutes of whole-body exposure to peak summer sunlight will generate and release up to 20,000 IU of Vitamin D3 into the circulation.
