Description

Clonidine is a type of Antihypertensive Pharmaceutical Drug.  It is an Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor Agonist.

Therapeutic Usage of Clonidine

Cardiovascular System

Clonidine is sometimes prescribed to lower Blood Pressure in High Blood Pressure patients (it achieves this effect by reducing the release of Norepinephrine and Adrenaline;  and by reducing cardiac output due to decreased heart rate and relaxation of capacitance vessels, with a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance).  [1]

Nervous System

Clonidine may be useful for the treatment of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome.  [2]

Clonidine functions as a Partial Agonist (stimulates and blocks at the same time) of Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptors.

Clonidine alleviates some cases of Anxiety.

 Clonidine may alleviate Spasticity.
