Toxic Effects of Lipoxygenase

Immune System

Lipoxygenase catalyzes the production of Series 4 Leukotrienes that are involved in the Inflammation process.  [1]

Excessive activity of 5-Lipoxygenase stimulates the proliferation of Prostate Cancer cells.  [2]

Metabolism

Excessive activity of 12-Lipoxygenase may be involved in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [3]

Nervous System

Excessive activity of 5-Lipoxygenase may be involved in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease due to its role in the production of inflammatory Series 4 Leukotrienes.  [4]

Skin

Excessive production of Lipoxygenase may cause Psoriasis by catalyzing the production of excessive quantities of Series 4 Leukotrienes.

These Substances may Inhibit the Production/Activity of Lipoxygenase

Enzymes

Glutathione Peroxidase may inhibit the production of Lipoxygenase.

Hormones

Melatonin may inhibit the production of Lipoxygenase.  [5]

Lipids

Boswellic Acid a constituent of the Herb, Boswellia may inhibit the 5-Lipoxygenase form of Lipoxygenase.  [6]
