Sublingual Delivery
Description
Sublingual Delivery is a form of Transmucosal Delivery of substances that involves retaining the substance below or beneath the Tongue; or in other regions of the Mouth; until it has been fully dissolved and absorbed. Substances delivered sublingually are absorbed by the Mucosal Tissue (Buccal Mucosa) and Blood Vessels beneath the Tongue.
Advantages of Sublingual Delivery
Sublingual Delivery causes greater absorption than Oral Delivery for many compounds as the Mucosal Tissue allows many compounds to enter thebloodstream without passing through the Gastrointestinal Tract. This permits a substance to avoid “first-pass” metabolism in the Liver.
