Dimethyltryptamine

Also known as:  Businessman's LSD;  DMT

Dimethyltryptamine is a type of Serotonin-like Psychedelic Drug.  It is the active ingredient of various types of South American snuff such as Cohoba (from the beans of Piptadenia peregrina), Epena (from the bark of trees found in the upper Amazon River Valley), and Yopo (from the West Indies).

The general effects of DMT are similar to those of LSD, although the duration of DMT's effects is shorter.

Nervous System

 DMT may cause Confusion.

 DMT may cause Euphoria.

 DMT may alter visual perception and may cause (true) Hallucinations.

 DMT influences various types of 5-HT Receptors (Serotonin Receptors):

 DMT functions as an agonist (stimulator) of 5-HT1A and 5-HT1C Receptors - it is presently believed that this is the primary means by which DMT causes its hallucinogenic effects.

 DMT is an agonist (stimulator) of 5-HT2 Receptors (Serotonin 2 Receptors) - it was formerly believed that this was the means by which DMT causes its hallucinogenic effects, however present views hold that DMT's hallucinogenic effects are attributable to it stimulating 5-HT1A and 5-HT1C Receptors.

 DMT is not absorbed when it is consumed orally.

 In order to be absorbed, DMT must be inhaled (smoked or sniffed).

 After its ingestion, the duration of action of DMT is short (approximately 1 hour).
