Description

Decoction is one of three Water Extraction Methods used in preparing Herbs for therapeutic use.  The Decoction method involves covering the parts of the Herb with cold Water, bringing the Water to boil and then simmering covered for 5 - 15 minutes.  This method is employed in preparing Herbal Teas.  Decoction is the more suitable of the two Water Extraction Methods when using the bark, roots and other rigid parts of a Herb.

Disadvantages of the Decoction Method

Bitter or otherwise unpleasant-tasting Herbs may attain a “bad taste” when prepared via the Infusion Method.
